ALTERNATOR SMOKESCREEN PROTOTYPE
In celebration of Generation One's debut in 1984, Takara has unleashed the highest quality Transformers line ever: Alternators! This line redefines classic characters- overhauling them with the latest in detailing and articulation while maintaining the essence of the original design. This line will see a Japanese release late this year, with a domestic release to follow early next year.
First, a comparison between the Gen One and Alternator Smokescreen-- how has twenty years of the toy industry changed him? He was originally in the series two lineup, an Autobot diversionary tactician who used both speed and intelligence on the battlefield. The Alternators version is fully twice the size of the original. His vehicle mode went from a Datsun racing chassis to a Subaru WRX racing chasis, adding a spoiler and a wind scoop to the dorsal fin. The removable rubber tires with detailed treading are still apparent, as are the opening doors. However, the Alternator now sports linked rack and pinion steering and opening hood and trunk! The open hood reveals a removable engine block which unfolds to become the rifle. Open doors reveal a fully detailed dashboard with gearshift, turn signal lever, and adjustable front and back seats. Opening the trunk reveals enough room for small weapons or missiles (not included with the prototype).
When transforming to robot mode, the rack that links the front steering mechanism pops out to reveal that it is held in place magnetically. When the robot's head emerges, you know that this is Smokescreen- the likeness to the Gen One hero is unbelievable! He features well over 20 points of articulation-- including wrist, thumb, and forefinger joints! This gives him almost limitless battle poses, a major improvement over the original. Overall, his transformation and robot mode closely echo the original, the physiology is all the same: hood becomes chest, bumper becomes feet, etc. This makes all the Alternators immediately recognizable to Generation One Transformers fans.
Although this prototype has all plastic construction, it is almost certain to feature diecast parts in the Japanese release. Smokescreen will be available in two detailing styles- each with a different racing number and either metallic or non-metallic finish. It is unknown if one style will be more rare than the other, but Transfans the world over will be desperate to get both once they see this toy line! |
