Robot-Japan will be having a drawing contest with Free robot toys given as prizes. Our fellow member Shaxper was kind enough to suggest this as a way of commemorating the anniversary of www.robot-japan.com in December. Robot-Japan's humble beginnings were in a news letter mailed out the winter of 1995.

******************************************

There will be four categories:

1) Best Kid's Drawing (14 and under). We welcome all robot drawing methods, designs, and ideas that are hand written on paper. Children, you must receive permission from your parents before entering this contest. Please be honest, Kids only! Click Here for Prize Details

2) Best "New and Original" Robot Drawing (can be won by any age). Funky, transforming, artistic, you name it, just make a new design and draw your original creation. Judges would like to see new designs from scratch. Do not use an existing robot. Please be aware that we might use this original character as a mascot for Robot-Japan. Click Here for Prize Details

3) Best Drawing/ Execution of an existing modern toy robot Design (can be won by any age). You may wish to take a modern toy design as inspiration, but be sure it is recognizable (for instance you could draw a your own Optimus Prime rendition). Modern robot designs are defined as robots made as toys after 1984. You may also make your own "futuristic" drawings. Here the devil is in the detail. You will be rewarded for having an artistic edge. Your sketching / coloring / drafting / detailing skills will be judged. We will reward robot ART. Click Here for Prize Details

4) Best Drawing/ Execution of an existing classic toy robot Design (can be won by any age). Classic robots are defined as designs before 1984 (examples include tin robots, Bullmark designs, Popy designs, or old school inspired designs) . You may use an existing design and put your own spin on it. Just be sure it is recognizable and has a "classic" look. Again the devil is in the detail. You will be rewarded for having an artistic edge. Your sketching / coloring /drafting /detailing skills will be judged. We will reward classic robot ART. Click Here for Prize Details

***************************************

Drawing submissions must be received by Saturday, February 1st. Judging will be finalized within one week.

Each participant's name will be entered into a drawing where extra toys will be awarded. Keep up the hope and send us your best work; it may pay off with prizes!

Each name will be entered only once in this random selection process for free prizes.

****************************************
We will give first and second place prizes for each category, but more awards may be announced later. Staff and sponsors will judge the work. All decisions will be final and subjective. Prizes will be mailed out by January 30th but there are NO guarantees as to when they will arrive.

QUESTIONS

Hi:

I have the following questions:

1)So I can submit two designs for each category?
Indeed, two designs are the maximum number of entries per category. So you could submit a maximum total of 6 pieces of work as an adult.

2a)For the "New and Original" category, do the drawings need to be coloured or will they be judged by the quality of the drawing in terms of color used, the medium the drawings are drawn on, the type of representations?

Your representations are at a premium and will be the main criterion for "New and Original work". Your concepts are what are emphasized. Color and drawing skills will be much less important in the judging.

2b) For the :new and original" category, do I need to
shown how the design was come about? Showing all
drawings (the preliminary designs to final design)?
Show all transformation sequence?

No, you just need to get your point/method across to the judges. Extra drawings are nice but not required if your concept and design is well executed.

3)For the category of "Best drawings / execution of an
existing toy robot design":

3a) The design should be based on or a modification of
an existing TV/move character robot?

Yes, you should use an existing robot character or toy or TV/ Movie. You may modify these designs as long as they are in the spirit of the existing design.

3b)The existing robot must be a Japanese TV character robot?

You need a Japanese tie-in here. The toy could be made in Japan (such as Japanese tin), or the robot design could simply be by a Japanese artist. Most early tin toys and robots sold in America were made by Japanese companies.

3c) This category will be judged by artistic skills? So someone who could used air brush technique would have a better chance against entries using regular medium?

To a some degree, yes, artists have an advantage. Fans or armatures may try to emphasize their strengths such as details, knowledge of their subject, or unique ideas. Fans and amateurs should not be discouraged; there may be extra prizes to award later. Keep in mind NO airbrushing is allowed. No computer graphics work is allowed either. The medium we are expecting is paper of some sort and in flat form. So most entries will be on an even footing ; the word "drawing" is emphasized.

3d) Will the design / modification be taken into consideration?

My hope is for the execution of the design on paper to be most important. The design/ modification should be secondary and no existing design will receive favoritism.

4) If the design artworks need to be returned to the designers from outside the US, how would the return postage be paid and determined? (Checking out the postage fees at US Postal website? Would it be accurate?)

Great question. My suggestion is to look-up postage on a United States Postal Service site, www.usps.com to determine rates. It would be ideal if your country(or an entrant's foreign country) offers a way to pre-pay. Please e-mail admin@robot-japan.com if this can not be arranged.

This drawing contest will is sponsored by our kind donors and the staff. It is not for profit, only to share the hobby and promote the site. We welcome new visitors and hope you enjoy the hard work at a free cost!.
